How will the Future of Work affect how we deliver large scale change?

1

The world of work has changed forever - now the language of ‘the hybrid workforce’ is mainstream. What was a grand ‘work from home’ experiment has proven that five days a week, face-to-face, is not the only way to run a successful and thriving business.

2

Not where but how we work has become the catch cry of the workforce as return to work surveys across the country show minimal interest in full-time office-based work. For those of us driving transformational change programs across corporate Australia, our challenges are pretty pragmatic. How do we create and manage effective project delivery teams with a distributed project team and uncertain delivery environment? What effective communications look like when you can’t rely on the sponsor ‘rally the troops’ session? How can you measure the embedment of a culture shift? How do you set project teams up to have healthy debate and robust sessions to ‘kick the tyres’ of the project design when they don’t spend time together as humans?

Many organisations have established ‘Future of Work’ projects or working groups who are trying to ensure that as an organisation, you are responding to the needs of your business through determining new social contracts between your business and your workforce: This includes thinking through your CBD footprint (and the lifeblood of our CBD), the types of arrangements for our new and existing workforce, managing the health and wellbeing of your team and trying to map out what the future skills and capabilities are that will ensure our businesses will thrive in this emerging future.

We know that trying to set these intentions out in stand-alone projects will be a struggle. The ideal outcome is that we have a robust set of guiding principles about how we want our business to be and, through all the existing projects we have on our slate, we deploy our change approach to build that future. We use our vision for the Future of Work as the anchor stone to the way we think about designing and implementing business change. This requires a new way of thinking about change management. This requires deeper thinking across complex systems.
